Our Organic Unrefined Panela is grown in South America. Hidden in the cloud forests of the western Andes Mountains is a fertile, unspoiled region where sugarcane grows year-round, not far from pre-Inca ruins near the equator in Ecuador.
For millennia, the western watersheds of the Andes Mountains have provided the water and sediment to create highly fertile soils for abundant crops. With average temperatures between 50–73∞ Fahrenheit (10–23∞ C), and an average of about 80% humidity year-round, this weather is perfect for the sugarcane that produces panela.
Panela is a concentrate of freshly extracted sugar cane juice. The juice is beaten as the water content evaporates, and the result is a free-flowing pure granulated Panela. These are time honored methods still used all over South America. Our farmers use the same technology their forebearers used to bring us authentic Organic Unrefined Panela.
Panela, along with molasses, is a truly nutritious plant-based sweetener that comes from sugarcane.
