Unlocking More Of Mānuka – UMFHA and University of Waikato Launch Global Health Research.

Close up of manuka flower

New Zealand mānuka honey continues to shine on the world stage—not just in health food stores and homes, but now in the lab. The UMF™ Honey Association (UMFHA) is supporting the University of Waikato to reestablish the Honey Research Unit (HRU) and lead new research into this exceptional superfood.

🔬 What’s the focus?

The partnership kicks off with studies into the phenolic compounds (antioxidants) in mānuka honey—natural molecules now linked to many potential health benefits including the gut microbiome. Researchers will also explore mānuka’s unique physical properties, helping regulators around the world understand why mānuka honey stands apart from other honey varieties.

💡 More than mānuka

The research will also explore the mānuka tree itself, other native tree and honey species from New Zealand’s unique location deep in the South Pacific and continue vital bee research to strengthen the entire apiculture sector.

👩‍🔬 Who’s behind the Honey Research Unit?
Leading the charge is Dr. Megan Grainger, a top mānuka researcher, mentored by the late Professor Peter Molan, who pioneered mānuka honey science over 40 years ago. Dr. Grainger now heads the newly revived Honey Research Unit, supported by a team of leading scientists across chemistry, microbiology, physiology, and genetics. Part of the ambition of the (HRU) is to also bring together the many scientists around the world who are currently working to understand more about the many reported benefits of manuka honey.

🌿 Why it matters to you.
This collaboration aims to:

  • Advance global understanding of mānuka’s unique bioactivity
  • Increase the evidence supporting mānuka honey for the knowledge of health professionals and consumers worldwide
  • Foster stronger connections between researchers, beekeepers, industry leaders, and government bodies
