Oat bran is easy to cook on the stovetop and makes a creamy, high-fiber hot breakfast.
The general ratio is 2 parts liquid to 1 part oat bran, but this can be adjusted to the consistency you prefer.
Stovetop Method
The stovetop method provides a rich, creamy texture like cream of wheat.
Ingredients (1 Serving):
- 1 cup water or a mix of water and milk. If you want to just use milk, or any plant-based milk don’t let it boil, bring it to just under the boil.
- 1/2 cup oat bran
- A pinch of salt is optional
Instructions:
- Boil: In a small saucepan, bring the water and salt to a boil over medium-high heat. If using only milk, bring it to just under the boil.
- Add Oat Bran: Gradually whisk in the oat bran. Stirring constantly is really important so it doesn’t clump.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to a low simmer. Continue cooking for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture has thickened to the consistency you like.
- Serve: Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. The mixture will thicken slightly as it cools.
Serving suggestions:
- While cooking you can add a few shakes of cinnamon and nutmeg, some raisins, cranberries or a dash of vanilla essence.
- Top with sliced apple, banana, kiwi fruit, chopped nuts, fresh strawberries, or blueberries.
- Stir in a generous teaspoon of Schullo Peanut Butter or Almond Butter for some extra protein. A teaspoon of chia seeds works well also.
- You can’t go wrong with a drizzle of Maple Syrup either.
- Or you could try adding 2 tablespoons of shredded coconut and 1 tablespoon of freshly grated lemon zest. This is a deliciously simple topping to mix into your Oat Bran.
